A Doctor Told Roy Rogers and Dale Evans to Put Their Baby Away. They Took Her Home. After Robin Elizabeth Rogers was born in August 1950, a doctor advised Roy Rogers and Dale Evans to place their daughter in an institution. Robin had Down syndrome and a serious heart defect. The doctor warned that she might not live long and that caring for her would take attention away from the other children in the Rogers household. In mid-century America, when children with intellectual disabilities were frequently hidden from public life, the recommendation was not unusual. Roy answered that they would take Robin home. At the time, he and Dale were among the most recognizable entertainers in America. Roy had announced Robin’s birth to a rodeo crowd of roughly 90,000 people. Their films, radio appearances and merchandise presented a bright Western world where good people always found their way safely home. The private reality awaiting them was more fragile: medical appointments, constant vigilance and a child vulnerable to illnesses her body had little strength to resist. Robin lived within the family rather than apart from it. Dale later said that those two years changed the household’s understanding of patience, faith and responsibility. Then mumps passed through the family. Robin developed encephalitis and died on August 24, 1952, two days before her second birthday. Dale responded by writing a small book. Published in 1953, Angel Unaware was only sixty-three pages long and told Robin’s story as though the child were speaking to God after returning to heaven. It was openly religious and deeply personal, but its public consequence reached beyond the Rogers family. Dale had written plainly about raising and loving a child whom many parents of that era would have been urged to conceal. The book became one of the year’s bestsellers. At appearances, parents began bringing children with Down syndrome out to meet Dale—children who had seldom been taken into stores, theaters or large public gatherings because their families expected rejection. That same year, a group of Oklahoma parents established a school for children with developmental disabilities. After reading Angel Unaware, they named it for Dale. The organization eventually became the Dale Rogers Training Center, providing employment and support services far beyond its original classroom. Roy Rogers spent his career playing a cowboy who brought people safely home. With Robin, he did something quieter. He refused to send his own child away.

Bobby Bare Jr. was five when his father placed him beside a studio microphone and let him ask a string of impossible childhood questions. Shel Silverstein had written “Daddy What If” as a conversation between a boy and his father. Bare did not polish the child out of the recording. His son’s small voice, uncertain timing and complete trust were the reason the song worked. Released on Lullabys, Legends and Lies, it reached No. 2 on the country chart in 1973. Television producers noticed. The Bare family followed with Singin’ in the Kitchen, an informal album featuring Bobby’s wife, Jeannie, and their children Cari, Shannon and Bobby Jr. For one summer, the family traveled and performed together. There was an obvious commercial future available. Bare ended it. When Hee Haw wanted to hire Bobby Jr. after the children appeared on the show, his father said no. He had enjoyed making the records with them, but he did not want his son living inside the attention given to a successful child performer. Bobby Jr. later remembered that his parents removed the children from entertainment because they did not want them becoming washed-up performers before reaching their teens. The decision carries additional weight beside Bare’s own childhood. His mother died when he was five—the same age his son was when they recorded “Daddy What If.” His father could not support three children alone, and the family was divided among relatives and neighbors. By fifteen, Bobby was working on farms and in factories. Fame had finally given him the money to keep a family together. He would not allow fame to reorganize that family around itself. Bobby Jr. eventually became a musician, but he returned as an adult and chose a harder, noisier path far outside his father’s shadow. In 2005, he produced The Moon Was Blue for the elder Bare. By then, the little boy had acquired his own voice. His father had helped preserve the years in which he was allowed to find it.

Their unusual arrangement had begun shortly after Wanda and Wendell married in 1961. He left a promising career in computers to travel with her, eventually becoming her booking agent and manager. Gina was born in 1962 and Greg in 1964. Wanda worked while her parents and trusted caregivers supplied the daily continuity that touring could not. In 1971, Wanda and Wendell converted to Christianity and began reconsidering the order of their lives. She left the nightclub circuit and concentrated on gospel music. Wendell became part of the programs as a speaker. Even this attempt to place faith and family ahead of career did not remove the road; it simply changed where the family’s income came from and what happened after the curtain opened. When their experiment with staying home failed, Wanda and Wendell resumed traveling with the support of the people who had always helped care for the children. She did not claim that the decision erased her guilt. She only acknowledged that singing was the work through which she knew how to live. Years later, Gina and Greg were grown, gospel bookings had diminished, and European audiences began calling Wanda back to the rockabilly songs America had largely forgotten. Wendell reorganized the calendar once more. The Jackson children had not been raised inside an ordinary home. They had been raised inside an arrangement—grandparents, caregivers, telephone calls, returns and departures—held together imperfectly by more hands than the audience ever saw.

Donna Reed Was Never Only the Woman Hollywood Asked Her to Play At seventeen, Donnabelle Mullenger left an Iowa farm for Los Angeles because her family could not afford the college education she wanted. She stayed with an aunt, enrolled at Los Angeles City College and supported herself by washing dishes and performing clerical work. A campus beauty contest led to a screen test. MGM signed her, changed her name to Donna Reed and placed her in a succession of wholesome supporting roles. Reed spent years trying to move beyond that image. In From Here to Eternity, she played Lorene, a nightclub hostess living far from Bedford Falls. The performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her greatest popular success came through television. The Donna Reed Show ran from 1958 through 1966, placing a mother rather than a father at the center of a family sitcom. Behind the camera, Reed exercised substantial creative control, studying lighting and cinematography while working as an uncredited producer. When the series ended, she stepped back from regular acting, raised her children and became active against the Vietnam War. She served as a leading figure in Another Mother for Peace, opposed nuclear power and campaigned for Eugene McCarthy in 1968. Her final major role came in 1984 when she replaced Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie on Dallas. When the producers brought Bel Geddes back and removed Reed, she sued, arguing that she had been hired as the character—not as a temporary stand-in. The case was settled in 1985. Reed received her contracted salary and the freedom to work elsewhere. That December, doctors discovered pancreatic cancer. She died at home on January 14, 1986, thirteen days before her sixty-fifth birthday. Her final professional dispute had not concerned applause or nostalgia. It concerned whether a woman with four decades of work could still insist that her name on a contract meant exactly what it said.
