For nearly two years, Wanda Jackson and Wendell Goodman stopped traveling and tried to become full-time parents. It should have corrected an old imbalance. Their daughter Gina and son Greg had grown up with nannies, weekends at their grandparents’ house and parents whose work was measured in hotel rooms and distant stages. Wanda later admitted that she carried guilt about the childhood they had been given. Yet when the suitcases stayed unpacked, the household did not settle into the life she imagined. Wanda was unhappy. Wendell was unhappy. Most unexpectedly, the children were not accustomed to having both parents home all the time. The family had spent years learning how to remain connected through departures; constant togetherness required another set of habits entirely. Their unusual arrangement had begun shortly after Wanda and Wendell married in 1961. He left a promising career in computers to travel with her, eventually becoming her booking agent and manager. Gina was born in 1962 and Greg in 1964. Wanda worked while her parents and trusted caregivers supplied the daily continuity that touring could not. In 1971, Wanda and Wendell converted to Christianity and began reconsidering the order of their lives. She left the nightclub circuit and concentrated on gospel music. Wendell became part of the programs as a speaker. Even this attempt to place faith and family ahead of career did not remove the road; it simply changed where the family’s income came from and what happened after the curtain opened. When their experiment with staying home failed, Wanda and Wendell resumed traveling with the support of the people who had always helped care for the children. She did not claim that the decision erased her guilt. She only acknowledged that singing was the work through which she knew how to live. Years later, Gina and Greg were grown, gospel bookings had diminished, and European audiences began calling Wanda back to the rockabilly songs America had largely forgotten. Wendell reorganized the calendar once more. The Jackson children had not been raised inside an ordinary home. They had been raised inside an arrangement—grandparents, caregivers, telephone calls, returns and departures—held together imperfectly by more hands than the audience ever saw.

Donna Reed Was Never Only the Woman Hollywood Asked Her to Play At seventeen, Donnabelle Mullenger left an Iowa farm for Los Angeles because her family could not afford the college education she wanted. She stayed with an aunt, enrolled at Los Angeles City College and supported herself by washing dishes and performing clerical work. A campus beauty contest led to a screen test. MGM signed her, changed her name to Donna Reed and placed her in a succession of wholesome supporting roles. During World War II, servicemen wrote to her from barracks, tunnels and battlefields; she personally answered many and kept 341 of their letters. In 1946, Reed played Mary Bailey in It’s a Wonderful Life. The film was not immediately the American institution it later became, but Mary’s steadiness fixed Reed inside the public imagination as the woman who could hold a home together. Reed spent years trying to move beyond that image. In From Here to Eternity, she played Lorene, a nightclub hostess living far from Bedford Falls. The performance earned her the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. Her greatest popular success came through television. The Donna Reed Show ran from 1958 through 1966, placing a mother rather than a father at the center of a family sitcom. Behind the camera, Reed exercised substantial creative control, studying lighting and cinematography while working as an uncredited producer. When the series ended, she stepped back from regular acting, raised her children and became active against the Vietnam War. She served as a leading figure in Another Mother for Peace, opposed nuclear power and campaigned for Eugene McCarthy in 1968. Her final major role came in 1984 when she replaced Barbara Bel Geddes as Miss Ellie on Dallas. When the producers brought Bel Geddes back and removed Reed, she sued, arguing that she had been hired as the character—not as a temporary stand-in. The case was settled in 1985. Reed received her contracted salary and the freedom to work elsewhere. That December, doctors discovered pancreatic cancer. She died at home on January 14, 1986, thirteen days before her sixty-fifth birthday. Her final professional dispute had not concerned applause or nostalgia. It concerned whether a woman with four decades of work could still insist that her name on a contract meant exactly what it said.

Elvis Presley Could Sing “Guitar Man.” He Still Needed Jerry Reed’s Right Hand The song had already been written. The problem was that its guitar part belonged almost entirely to the hand that had written it. Elvis Presley entered RCA’s Nashville studio in September 1967 determined to record Jerry Reed’s “Guitar Man.” Reed’s original single had reached only No. 53 on the country chart, but its nervous, running acoustic figure had caught Presley’s attention. The musicians in the room were among Nashville’s best. They could follow a chart, change keys without disturbing a session and build a record around almost any singer. Reed’s opening refused to settle beneath another player’s fingers. He did not use the guitar like a conventional rhythm instrument. His right hand separated bass movement, chords and syncopated melody into interlocking parts. The effect sounded loose and conversational. Reproducing it required understanding the private mechanics beneath the looseness. The session finally brought Reed into the studio. Once his guitar entered, the record found its motion. Presley did not ask Reed to simplify the pattern or translate it for a more conventional player. He let the songwriter supply the sound that had made him want the song. Reed remained for “Big Boss Man,” adding the same restless propulsion to Presley’s version of the Jimmy Reed blues number. Presley later recorded Reed’s “U.S. Male,” again using the guitarist whose work could not be separated cleanly from the composition. The sessions changed how Nashville heard Jerry Reed. He had spent years writing, recording and becoming a respected guitarist without a major public identity. Now the most famous singer in America had encountered a Reed song and discovered that owning the notes was not enough. Reed later became known for “Amos Moses,” “When You’re Hot, You’re Hot,” “East Bound and Down” and his film work. Comedy made him recognizable. The 1967 session preserved something more exact. Elvis could cover Jerry Reed’s song. To make it sound like “Guitar Man,” he had to call Jerry Reed.

James Garner’s mother died when he was four. He and his brothers were passed among relatives before returning to a home where a stepmother later subjected them to physical and verbal abuse. By sixteen, Garner had left Oklahoma and joined the Merchant Marine. The ease audiences eventually saw in him had not come from an easy life. He served as an infantryman during the Korean War, was wounded twice and received two Purple Hearts. Yet when Hollywood began placing him in westerns, Garner showed little interest in playing men who proved themselves by absorbing punishment without complaint. Bret Maverick preferred talking his way out of danger. He gambled, calculated the odds and regarded a gunfight as evidence that a better plan had failed. When Maverick made Garner a star in 1957, television westerns were filled with lawmen and solemn heroes. Garner gave audiences a man who could be brave without pretending to enjoy being shot at. That temperament followed him into The Great Escape, The Americanization of Emily, Murphy’s Romance and, most completely, The Rockford Files. Jim Rockford lived in a trailer, worried about unpaid bills and attempted to avoid fights because fights hurt. Garner’s body knew that better than viewers realized. The weekly production schedule left him with damaged knees, back trouble and surgeries before he finally stopped the original series in 1980. His refusal to be pushed extended offscreen. Garner successfully challenged Warner Bros. when the studio suspended his pay during a writers’ strike. Years later, he sued Universal over profits from Rockford. He did not reject the characters; he rejected agreements he believed were dishonest. At home, another decision lasted longer than either series. Garner married Lois Clarke in 1956, two weeks after meeting her. They remained married until his death fifty-eight years later. Hollywood repeatedly cast James Garner as the man who made difficulty look manageable. The calm was convincing because he had spent a lifetime deciding which battles deserved him.
